On October 5, 2024, Echoes of Africa debuted at The Post Building in downtown St. Louis, launching a festival conceived as a cultural dialogue and a creative ecosystem. Co-founded by President Njideka E. and Florie Naomi, co-founder and creative lead strategist, the first edition drew nearly 500 guests and turned the venue into a vibrant showcase of African artistry, innovation and community.

Vision and purpose

Echoes of Africa set out to reframe the story of African heritage by centering diasporic ingenuity, craftsmanship and creative exchange. Florie brought the festival to life from every angle: coordinating the event, leading marketing and partnerships, directing rehearsals, sculpting hairpieces for the fashion presentation, styling models, overseeing video and photography, and performing an original song and the national anthem on opening day.

Program highlights

Art as resistance. Diasporic performance, textiles and public art invited healing and dialogue, with visual storytelling supported by the Regional Arts Council and the Saint Louis Art Museum.

Rhythms of the continent. Live music blended traditional African drumming with contemporary Afrobeats, a sonic journey across generations.

African fashion on the rise. A runway showcase featured local Washington University designers, bold prints and inventive silhouettes, along with a children's segment celebrating the next generation.

Taste of Africa. A food market of stews, grilled specialties, street food and sweets reflected the breadth of African cuisine.

Tech meets tradition. With TechSTL and WashU, African innovators in medicine, data and manufacturing shared interactive showcases.

Partnerships and momentum

Echoes of Africa was produced in partnership with TechSTL, with support from sponsors including Husch Blackwell, Reinsurance Group of America, the Seny Collection and the Saint Louis Art Museum, partnerships that reflected the festival's ambition to bring culture, technology and civic life together.

Why it matters

For Florie, Echoes of Africa was a mission more than an event: elevating diaspora stories, empowering local artists and entrepreneurs, and fusing heritage with innovation. By weaving media, art, fashion, food and technology together, the festival invited St. Louis to experience Africa's creative energy up close.
